Washington High School is a new high school built in 2012 and located at 1111 South Avenue B in Washington, IA and has an enrollment of over 500 students in grades 9-12. It’s state of the art auditorium is home to numerous events both by the school and through the community. The Washington Community School District covers over 200 square miles in the heart of Washington County including the city of Brighton. The school district’s enrollment is approximately 1,800 students.
Washington High School has a 4X4 block schedule that provides faculty and students with greater flexibility and variety for teaching techniques. Washington features a teacher homeroom program to personalize each student’s high school experience by assisting the student to establish a connection between school and life. This year, students will have the opportunity to participate in a program designed to provide students access to everything they might want or need including enrichment, extension and intervention classes. Each year, Washington High School students excel in academic, performing arts and athletic competitions at local, district and state levels. Our high school prides itself in academic performance. Over 95% of our seniors will graduate with a rigorous graduation curriculum. And, a Silver Cords program in which Washington High School personnel believe in helping students understand the importance of volunteering. This year’s graduating class will accumulate over 13,000 hours of service.
Washington High School also works closely with staff from Kirkwood Community College to offer Academy and Concurrent credit courses. When a student takes a college course, they earn dual credit, high school and college. Washington High School offers over 30 classes in which students can receive the dual credit.
