4-H Blood Drive
January 27 @ 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm
January is National Blood Donor Month and Washington County 4-H County Council is hosting a blood drive on January 27 from 3pm-7pm in the basement of Dallmeyer Hall.
Many variables can impact our blood inventories such as weather, holidays or tragic events. Every day, patients who need blood are in crisis and you can help by volunteering to donate. Less than 10% of the population gives blood, so donors that give on a regular basis are important to meet these needs.
-Did you know that every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood? This urgent need spans emergencies and treatments like cancer therapy, surgeries, and transplants. Yet, only 3% of eligible Americans donate, and only 12% of donations come from communities of color. With a 40% rise in donors over 65, there’s an urgent call for younger, more diverse donors.
-Every two seconds, someone needs blood—whether from trauma, cancer, sickle cell disease, or childbirth. Despite this, only 3% of Americans donate each year, making it challenging for centers that supply 60% of the nation’s blood to meet demand.
-Cancer patients need 25% of America’s blood supply, making them the largest group requiring transfusions. This National Blood Donor Month, I deeply thank the 3% of people who donate each year—their selfless act has saved lives like mine.
-More than 50 years ago — on December 31, 1969 — the president of the United States signed a proclamation designating January as National Blood Donor Month (NBDM). The month-long observance was meant to honor voluntary blood donors and to encourage more people to give blood at a time when more blood is needed.
-January is more than just the start of the New Year. It’s also National Blood Donor Month, an opportunity to recognize those across the country who regularly roll up their sleeves and help save lives. Without the generosity of those who give so selflessly, millions of patients each year would not have the blood they require for emergency needs or ongoing treatments.
