Course One: Talking to the News

A well-planned strategic communications plan is a critical part of an organization’s success. How do I efficiently communicate the best message, through the correct channels, to the right people, at the right time? In this 90-minute course, we will cover best practices of talking with news media, how to navigate “on-record” vs “off-record” conversations, and other tips for business, non-profits, election campaigners, and other organizations needing to communicate with news outlets.

Course Two: Strategic Communications 101

What is strategic communication and how is it different from marketing? Is my information newsworthy? This course is your one-stop shop to learn everything you need to know about writing news releases, issuing statements, and reacting when asked for a quote. We will cover basic news release writing tips, and review good and bad examples of prepared communication sent to the media. Course is designed for people in marketing roles, board presidents, and anyone else who represents the face of their organization.

Course Three: Strategic Communications Crash Course

This course is intended as a continuation for participants who completed the Strategic Communications 101 Course and want advanced knowledge and practice. Students will draft their own news releases and workshop their writing. At the end of this course, you will leave with confidence and a publication-ready template news release. Bring your laptop or use a Kirkwood student laptop.

Course Four: Emergency Communications

No one expects a crisis at their business. This course is a primer on how to handle bad news, when to take information to the public, and balance the need for discretion with the need to maintain the public’s trust. Learn what to say during rapidly evolving situations, different ways to shape the narrative, and how to recover from bad press. This course will be geared toward major employers and local government officials, but it would be useful to anyone who represents an organization of any size.
