The federally funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, opened on Friday to applicants and will run through April 30 on a first-come, first-served basis.
LIHEAP is a federally-funded program designed to assist low income families meet the cost of home heating by providing a one-time payment to the heating utility company such as Alliant Energy, which serves the city of Washington. To be eligible for assistance, residents must be at or below 175 percent of 2019 federal poverty lines — an annual gross income at or below $21,858 for a single-person household, or at or below $45,063 for a family of four. Any customer who is having financial challenges should contact Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) to discuss their eligibility and to get weatherization information.
