The City of Washington’s budget process for Fiscal Year 2020-2021 has begun. The Council is expected to meet to discuss the budget on the following dates:
Tuesday, January 28 at 6 PM at the Washington Public Library, 115 West Washington, Nicola-Stoufer Room
Tuesday, February 11 at 6 PM at the Washington Fire Station, 215 East Washington, Training Room (also max levy hearing & consider max levy resolution)
Tuesday, February 25 at 6 PM at the Washington Fire Station, 215 East Washington, Training Room (set full budget hearing)
Tuesday, March 17 at 6 PM at the Washington Fire Station, 215 East Washington, Training Room (hold full budget hearing & consider full budget resolution)
The max levy hearing is a new requirement by the State of Iowa. This hearing will occur at the February 11 workshop. The Council is required to hold a hearing and then adopt a resolution certifying the amount of property tax dollars to be levied for the next fiscal year If the amount of property tax dollars to be levied represents a 2% or greater increase from the current year, it takes a 2/3 supermajority of the Council to pass the resolution. This year, Washington’s total levied dollars are expected to increase by just 0.32%, and the levy rate will remain the same overall. See below for the max levy hearing notice.
