WASHINGTON, IA – The Leadership Washington 2024-25 class had an insightful and engaging City & County Government Day, gaining firsthand knowledge of the essential services that keep Washington running.
The day’s activities included a behind-the-scenes tour of the Washington County EOC, 9-1-1 Center, Jail and Sheriff’s Office, where participants learned about corrections operations and emergency telecommunications. The group also visited the new Board of Supervisors room at Orchard Hill, seeing where key decisions affecting the county are made.
At City Hall, class members met with local officials to discuss municipal operations and ongoing community initiatives. The tour continued at the Washington Police Department and Fire Department, where leaders provided an inside look at public safety efforts, emergency response procedures, and the dedication required to serve and protect the community.
The final stop was the Washington County Ambulance Service, where participants gained a deeper appreciation for the lifesaving work of paramedics and emergency medical responders.
Leadership Washington’s City & County Government Day offered an invaluable opportunity to connect with local leaders, witness government operations in action, and develop a deeper understanding of how these entities work together to serve the residents of our Washington community. The leaders for the day were Jim Lester, Jenny Morgan and Jonathon Ward.
Leadership Washington is a dynamic community awareness and leadership development program designed to educate, inspire, and connect current and future leaders in Washington. Since 1989, the program has provided participants with a comprehensive view of the community, fostering a deeper understanding of its people, needs, and opportunities. Through nine monthly sessions from September to May, participants explore key aspects of local government, businesses, agriculture, and industry while building lasting networks that transcend professional and economic boundaries. Graduates of Leadership Washington emerge with enhanced leadership skills, a stronger civic commitment, and a passion for driving the community forward.
