THEATER
Washington’s theatrical history dates back to the 1850’s beginning with traveling shows and developing into lavish local dramatic, comedic and musical theater productions. In 1976, Washington Community Theater opened to accommodate spectacular local performances that rivaled professional shows. Now, besides its own performance schedule, Washington Community Theater collaborates yearly with the Old Creamery Theater to provide children’s theater workshops. In 2015 The Washington Performing Arts and Events Center opened at the new high school. This state-of-the-art facility provides students and the community with an annual area talent show, professional traveling events including actors, musicians, dancers, magicians, etc. as well as educational artist workshops for students. Theater education begins in Washington elementary school programs and is developed through middle school and high school plays. Students may also explore speech and drama activities through a thriving high school speech team program.
MUSIC
Music is an equally important facet of Washington’s celebration of the arts. Washington Concert Association provides yearly professional entertainment with reciprocity at other area venues. Vocalists enjoy performing in the annual Broadway musicals produced by the Washington Community Theater. The Washington Municipal Band provides outdoor summer concerts by area musicians in our beautiful Central Park. Other local and professional musicians also perform. Big Band Theory, an array of accomplished area alumni and professional musicians, assembles several times a year just for fun and to entertain their audiences. Many local establishments also showcase musicians on weekends, and the Washington Public Library hosts local artists for noontime concerts. Our young folks flourish through outstanding vocal and instrumental music programs at school and may take advantage of several highly trained private instructors. Music therapy classes are also available locally.
ART
Our children also enjoy learning about art and creating their own masterpieces through outstanding programs K-12! We are also proud to support our own professional art gallery, Art Domestique, located on the square. The Washington Public Library and the schools showcase artwork on a regular basis. For special occasions local businesses celebrate the arts by opening their display windows to local artists of all ages. The Let’s Center for the Healing and Creative Arts offers lessons for a variety of skills including 2D and 3D art, cooking, jewelry making, etc. Workshops offer a variety of experience levels to meet the needs of interested participants.
